ABOUT THE PDP
The Papua Presidium Council is the formal organisation of tribal
people in West Papua. It is the re-incarnation of the New Guinea
Council (New Guinea Raad) established in October 1961.
The Council represents about 245 tribal groups with more than 2
million native population who inhabited the island since more than
ten thousand years ago. It also represents transmigrants from
Indonesia who were sent in by the Indonesian under a massive social
engineering programme in the 20th century called
"transmigration project."
The Council consists of two Co-chairmen, 22 Full Members and 240
representatives of the tribal people in West Papua. For the
first time, the Co-Chairmen are Mr Thom Beanal (Amungme Tribal
Leader) and Mr. Theys H. Eluway (Sentani Tribal Leader). They were
democratically elected by a historic general assembly of tribes on
February 23rd to 26th, 2000.
